Ford swings to $2.7 billion profit

| NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Ford Motor earned $2.7 billion in the second quarter, reversing from an operating loss in the prior year's quarter and easily topping estimates. The automaker earned 68 cents a share, excluding special items. That compares to a loss of $638 million, or 21 cents a share, on the same basis in the year earlier quarter. The consensus forecast of analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters was for earnings of 40 cents a share. Ford easily topped even the most bullish forecast of a 48 cent a share profit. |

WSJ reports that Ford has already yanked a bond deal, because the ratings agencies, fearing legal liability, won't let the automaker puts their ratings in the prospectus, making a sale impossible. So did Dodd-Frank just kill the bond market? Well, probably not.. | Lakewood police are refurbishing some of their squad cars rather than buying new ones, a decision that could save the city $15,000 per upgraded car and help the vehicles handle better on the street. “For such a simple idea, it is really paying dividends,” said Assistant Police Chief Michael Zaro. “So far it’s been successful in saving us a lot of money, and we’re supporting a local business.” The department has about 60 Ford Crown Victorias patrolling the streets. | Everyone that knows me knows that I have a special place in my heart for Missouri politics. For us political junkies, there has been lots of excitement. At the end of June, Missouri Governor Jay Nixon called a special session to do two things. 1) Pass tax incentives to keep the Ford plant in Claycomo, Missouri and 2) reform Missouri’s state pension plan for future state employees. A 20+ hour filibuster against the $150 million tax credit proposal ended this morning in the Missouri Senate. I’m not a fan of corporate tax incentives. | Chuck Purgason began the filibuster at noon yesterday on the Monster of a "Tax Incentive" bill that would take 150 Million of Missouri taxpayer dollars and hand it over to Ford Motor Company. Give Missouri state Sen. Chuck Purgason credit for being an outspoken critic of the fuzzy logic being used to promote a huge taxpayer subsidy for Ford’s Claycomo plant. Purgason isn’t going quietly Monday, the day he was ousted as chairman of the Government Accountability and Fiscal Oversight Committee, with the help of Senate President Pro Tem Charlie Shields. Said Purgason in a hot-off-the-press statement: I guess (Shields) doesn’t like the way I’m holding government accountable. Ouch.
