Ford built at least 8000 B-24 aircraft in WWII. This a collection of 291 B&W photos from the Henry Ford Museum taken at the old Willow Run Airport and Ford Motor Co. in Detroit. During the war automobile manufacturing was suspended so that GM, Ford, etc., could concentrate on the manufacture of military vehicles and aircraft. Ford Motor Company's assembly line was located adjacent to Willow Run. The government and Boeing company told Henry Ford during the war that he could not build an airplane like a car on an assembly line. He built the freeway to the plant, built...

Of all the Democrats who sighed with relief at the news that New York Gov. David Paterson won't run for a full term in office this year, perhaps none was louder than that of Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand. While his exit clears the Democratic primary field for Attorney General Andrew Cuomo -- saving him both money for the general election and a potentially bloody, intraparty battle -- Gillibrand is assured she won't be running her first Senate campaign with a politically anemic governor at the top of the ticket. Paterson was scheduled to announce his decision to leave the race this...

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama took a major step toward improving strained ties with Syria on Tuesday, announcing his intention to reappoint a U.S. ambassador to Damascus after a five-year absence. The White House said Obama had nominated career diplomat Robert Ford to the post. The nomination must still be confirmed by the U.S. Senate. The United States withdrew its ambassador from Damascus in 2005 after the assassination in Beirut of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri. Syria's foes in Lebanon accused Damascus of involvement, a charge Syria denied.

NEW YORK - Former Tennessee congressman and undeclared U.S. Senate candidate Harold Ford Jr. says he'll file his first state tax return as a New Yorker this April. Ford is considering running in the Democratic primary for the Senate seat held by Kirsten Gillibrand (KEHR'-sten JIL'-uh-brand), who replaced Hillary Rodham Clinton. He has faced questions about whether he could effectively represent the state as a relatively recent transplant. Ford moved to New York shortly after losing the 2006 U.S. Senate race in Tennessee to take a job with brokerage firm Merrill Lynch but remained a Tennessee resident. He tells cable...

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand boxed out Harold Ford on his own turf Thursday night, reeling in the coveted endorsement of the New York County Democratic Party. The committee chose to pass over Ford, a Manhattanite who is mulling a challenge against Gillibrand, to endorse the incumbent from upstate. "In just a short period of time ... Gillibrand has proven herself to be a smart, hardworking advocate for the people of New York," said Assemblyman Keith Wright (D-Harlem), the county chair. Ford had met with Wright last month and recently had urged him and other county leaders to hold off on any...
