WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The top Republican on the Senate Banking Committee on Tuesday criticized the Commodity Futures Trading Commission's handling of MF Global's meltdown and said its chief is "evading" questions about his role in overseeing the company. Senator Richard Shelby said MF Global customers are waiting for their money to be returned while a "bewildered" CFTC searches for the funds. "The victims of MF Global, I believe, deserve better," Shelby said. Shelby made his comments at a Senate Banking Committee hearing on the implementation of the 2010 Dodd-Frank financial oversight law. CFTC Chairman Gary Gensler is testifying at the...

When Chevrolet unveiled the 580 hp 2012 Camaro ZL1 and its high-tech magnetically-adjustable suspension, ostensibly claiming the title of king of the pony cars, the folks from Ford were oddly unfazed. Dont worry, they said, wait until you see what we have in the works. They werent kidding. The 2013 Shelby GT500 will come packing a 650 hp supercharged engine that Ford says is the most powerful production V8 in the world. The 5.8-liter mill sends its 600 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels via a carbon fiber driveshaft.

Right now the fastest production car in the world is the hyper exclusive--and hyper expensive--Bugatti Veyron Super Sport, which is capable of a top speed of 268 mph. The previous record holder was the less refined, yet still very capable, Ultimate Aero from Americas own Shelby SuperCars (SSC), which itself stole the record from the original Veyron. Now SSC is set to reclaim the manufacturer of the worlds fastest production title from Bugatti with a brand new supercar, a supercar that will go by the name Tuatara (pronounced twu-tar-ah). Yes, SSC has taken a page out of Paganis book and...

WASHINGTON (AP) President Barack Obama intends to nominate former Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray to lead a new consumer financial protection bureau that was a central feature of a law that overhauled banking regulations. Obama plans to announce the nomination formally on Monday, the White House said in a statement Sunday. Republicans immediately threatened to block his Senate confirmation. In choosing Cordray, Obama bypassed Elizabeth Warren, a favorite of consumer groups, who has been assembling the agency as a special adviser to the White House and to Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner. The agency will officially begin its oversight and...

The Senate rejected a Republican measure Wednesday to expand offshore oil and gas drilling in U.S. coastal waters, signaling a continued partisan stalemate over energy policy and, more specifically, how to respond to rising gas prices. The bill was defeated in a 42-57 vote. Sixty votes were required for passage. Five Republicans -- Alabama's Richard Shelby, Louisiana's David Vitter, Maine's Olympia Snowe, South Carolina's Jim DeMint, and Utah's Mike Lee -- voted against the bill.

WASHINGTON (AP) Within hours of the stunning announcement that Osama bin Laden had been killed by U.S. commandos, a lobbying firm representing Pakistans government began contacting members of Congress and their staffs to counter claims Islamabad protected the al-Qaida chief for nearly six years. The push by Locke Lord Strategies to turn the tide against criticism of Pakistan and preserve the countrys billions of dollars in U.S. aid illustrates one of Washingtons enduring realities: No matter the issue or the crisis, lobbyists are working behind the scenes to shape opinions on Capitol Hill. At stake is the...

LECOMPTON, Kansas Imagine cleaning out a garage and finding something so amazing that it was like winning the lottery. It happened to a Lecompton businessman. Working as an auctioneer for the last 40 years, Bill Fair said he has come across some weird stuff. "A skull, body parts," he said. But Fair said even he wasn't prepared for what he found recently. What Fair found was a classic 66 Shelby Mustang one of only 1,100 made, and sold from Carroll Shelby's personal car lot.

ASHINGTON, June 7 A re-examination of years of terrorist plots and attacks around the world, including the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, suggests that American intelligence agencies profoundly underestimated Al Qaeda's reach and aspirations for more than a decade as it grew from obscurity into a global terrorist threat, lawmakers and investigators said this week.As Congressional investigators look back far beyond the series of signals missed before the Sept. 11 attacks, they are seeking answers to many questions about Al Qaeda that law enforcement and intelligence agencies still cannot answer themselves, officials said.In particular, they said, Congressional investigators are trying...

Supporters call it "financial services reform." Yet one has to wonder what the Restoring American Financial Stability Act of 2010 is reforming or stabilizing. The House on Wednesday by a 237-192 margin passed the 2,300-plus-page conference bill designed to protect American households from predatory practices by banks, subprime lenders, brokerage houses and other intermediaries. But evidence suggests that if it becomes law, the bill instead will lay the groundwork for another major federal bailout. During House-Senate conference sessions, affirmative action zealots inserted a host of mandates to promote credit allocation by race. Sen. Christopher Dodd, D-Conn., and Rep. Barney Frank,...

A Gulf state senator ripped BP chief executive Tony Hayward for taking time off Saturday to attend a glitzy yacht race around England's Isle of Wight as oil spewing into the Gulf continues to wreak havoc on the environment and wildlife. "That's the height of arrogance," Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Ala., told Fox News on Saturday.
